Chastleton House
Atmospheric Jacobean manor house near Moreton-in-Marsh, cared for by the National Trust.
Chastleton House is a Jacobean country house near Moreton-in-Marsh, looked after by the National Trust in a deliberately faded, lived-in state rather than a polished show home. That gives it real character: rooms full of the belongings of generations of the same family, a long gallery, a secret room and a famous topiary garden. The rules of croquet were even codified here.
It is a quieter, more grown-up National Trust visit, best suited to older children who can enjoy the history, hunt for the secret room and explore the gardens. There are family trails and dressing-up at busier times, and the gardens and surrounding countryside give space for a picnic and a walk. It is not a play-based attraction, so manage expectations with very young children.
It suits primary-age children and older, and history-minded families especially. Pre-booking is usually needed and opening days are limited, so check before travelling.
Good for: history, outdoors. Ages: 8–11, 12+.
