The treetop walkway is the bit everyone remembers, walking through the canopy is brilliant. Autumn is glorious but very busy, so go early and wear your wellies.

Westonbirt near Tetbury is the National Arboretum, a vast collection of trees from around the world with seventeen miles of paths winding through woodland and glades. For families it is a wonderful place to roam, with a high treetop walkway through the canopy, a natural play area, the STIHL Treetop Walkway and trails that turn a walk into an adventure of dens, climbing and discovery.

It is at its most famous in autumn, when the Japanese maples turn spectacular shades of red and gold and the place is busy with visitors, but it rewards a visit in every season. There are family trails, a Gruffalo-style spotting trail at times, seasonal events and a good cafe. The main paths are buggy and wheelchair friendly, though the wilder trails are rougher.

It suits all ages as a gentle outdoor day, with the treetop walkway and play areas a hit with children. Visit in autumn for the colour or any season for the space, and bring wellies.

Good for: outdoors, sensory. Ages: 0–2, 3–4, 5–7, 8–11, 12+.
