Climb the Clumps first thing for the views, then let the kids loose in the meadows. Take a picnic, there is nowhere reliable to buy lunch.

Earth Trust at Little Wittenham is an environmental charity that opens its land for free, and it is one of the best no-cost days out in south Oxfordshire. The big draw is the Wittenham Clumps, two beech-topped hills with wide views over the Thames Valley, reached by a gentle climb that most children can manage. From the top you can spot the river, the Sinodun Hills and miles of countryside.

The reserve has waymarked walks, wildflower meadows, woodland and access down to the River Thames, with plenty of space for den building, kite flying and nature spotting. There is a visitor centre with toilets and occasional family activities, and seasonal events run through the year. It is a place to slow down, get muddy and let children explore at their own pace.

It suits all ages, though buggy users should note the hill paths are uneven. Bring a picnic and make a morning of it.

Good for: outdoors, sensory. Ages: 0–2, 3–4, 5–7, 8–11, 12+.
