A quiet, free loop round the lake with the ducks is the perfect low-key morning. Flat paths make it easy with a buggy, so bring a picnic and let the toddlers set the pace.

Witney Lake and Country Park is a free, easygoing green space on the edge of Witney, set around a lake formed from old gravel workings with the River Windrush and meadows nearby. It is a simple, no-cost outing for families, with flat, mostly buggy-friendly paths around the water, plenty of ducks and wildfowl to watch, and open grassland for running, ball games and a picnic.

There is no built attraction here, just pleasant walking, wildlife spotting and fresh air, which is exactly what some days call for. The lakeside loop is short enough for little legs, the meadows are good for kite flying, and it is an easy place to break up errands or burn off energy. Being free with free parking makes it a handy local favourite.

It suits all ages as a relaxed couple of hours, with toddlers enjoying the ducks and water and older children the space to roam. Bring a picnic and wellies, and feed the ducks with proper duck food rather than bread.

Good for: outdoors, water, sensory. Ages: 0–2, 3–4, 5–7, 8–11, 12+.
